The World Affairs Council of Austin is pleased to offer a presentation by Jeremy Haft. Mr. Haft will outline the protectionist policies currently being advocated by both sides of the political spectrum. These protectionist efforts would have the opposite of their intended effect: they’d destroy more jobs than they save, especially in the manufacturing and agricultural Rust Belt. Mr. Haft will present alternative ways to “fix” trade, ways that would safeguard jobs, health, and safety without saving some jobs at the expense of others.

For two decades, Jeremy Haft has built and run companies on the front lines in China. He has overseen hundreds of sourcing and import/export programs between American and Chinese enterprises in a wide variety of industries and agriculture, spanning shipbuilding and refineries to auto parts and medical supplies to pork and cowhides. Haft’s current company is an export trading company, selling U.S. agricultural products to China, Hong Kong, and other Asian destinations. Prior to his China work, Haft was a founder of one of the first Internet ad agencies in New York City, which was ranked in the country’s top five and acquired in 1997. An adjunct professor at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service and McDonough School of Business, he is the author of All the Tea in China, a primer on how to do business in China, and the recent Unmade in China, which examines America’s enduring competitive advantages over China in the coming century. Haft has conducted many briefings about China trade and U.S. competitiveness to members of Congress, ambassadors, senior military officers, and the business community. His analysis has also been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, US News and World Report, NPR, BBC, and cable news, among other media outlets.
